Writing For Recovery

Therapeutic Creative Writing Program

About the

Program

My name is Benjamin Burgholzer. I'm a published writer and hold a PhD in English and Creative Writing from Binghamton University. I've also been in recovery for substance use disorder since 2008.

There are many members of my family in recovery, and I've been on many of the different sides of substance use disorder. Throughout my recovery, I have found writing to be essential to my own healing and growth, and there is plenty of research to back up this very thing.

After receiving a New York Public Humanities Grant in 2019, I began to craft a program that sought to share this gift to with people who desperately need a creative outlet: people in treatment for substance abuse disorder.

The results were profound and became what is the first anthology of many, Writing for Recovery Vol 1 Issue 1. I hope this anthology will help humanize people in treatment both to loved ones and the communities they live in. A link to the anthology can be found below on a desktop or here on a mobile device.

How I Can Help You?

After seeing the results of these workshops, I decided not to limit them just to people who are in treatment facilities.

All workshops can be recovery focused or non-recovery focused. What you'd like to work on is entirely up to you. I have experience writing creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Each workshop comes with a free digital consultation where we discuss what you'd like your focus to be and see if you think the program would be a good match for you.
